16 days of activism changes nothing

The abuse and exploitation of women continues unabated despite numerous, futile efforts to highlight it.

IN the next 15 days, for the 13th time, South Africans will be taking part in the global 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, which runs from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) through to International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
I have written about this before and how futile it is with acts of violence against women taking place unabated.

It’s an issue I feel strongly about and never have to look far to find examples of not only women abuse, but also exploitation of women. Take the police bust of a brothel in Durban North.

A total of 14 women were arrested and police believe that it was a human trafficking syndicate that was also operating from the suburb. I don’t know the reasons why these Thai women were part of what police believe was a sex ring, but I have noticed that most of the busts see police arresting mostly women. Earlier this year a suspected brothel operating out of Prestondale was shut down by police who arrested two women, including one who they allege was the ‘madam’.

Police believe that the rented house situated on the quiet Maple Close was at the centre of a massive sex ring. Exploitation of women as I see it and 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, which runs from 25 November will come and go and nothing will of changed.
