Big bangs persist

Animal owners should brace themselves for Diwali, Guy Fawkes and New Year celebrations as the use of banned big bangs look set to continue.

IT’S been many years and still the issue of setting off loud bangs has not been resolved. Despite the city issuing a ban on the use of loud big bang fireworks, during what is supposed to be festival of lights, we still hear of the its rampant use.

Every year the SPCA and animal rights organisations reiterate the importance of using fireworks responsibly and every year this call is ignored. And while Diwali is celebrated on Thursday its compounded by the fact that we are heading towards the end of the year when some people take to celebrating Guy Fawkes on 5 November with loud bangs.

Many Durban residents also set off loud bangs on New Year’s Eve to ring in the new year. Fireworks shops have begun popping up all over the place selling the loud bangs that cause a huge amount of stress to animals.
