Duelling decades

POP Culture of the 80s and 90s is rampant in our lives today, but when it comes to music, which decade was the best?

These two decades will determine this by undertaking a duel at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway, when 80s vs 90s is staged from 27 August to 13 October.

80s vs 90s will take audiences on a musical roller-coaster as the talented cast revive songs from both decades, but there’s also lots of fun to be had as two fanatical hosts go head-to-head to back their favourite era!

The 80s saw the emergence of new wave and electronic pop, while the 90s experienced grunge and hip hop music, and rock music remained popular throughout both decades.

The show starts with male versus female pop stars. How will Depeche Mode take on MC Hammer, and will Frankie Goes to Hollywood beat Dr Alban? Belinda Carlisle will have you singing along with Heaven Is A Place On Earth, as she takes on Alanis Morissette’s anthems like You Oughta Know and Hand In Pocket.

It then move on to the one-hit wonders. The 80s gave us hits like, I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight and, I Don’t Like Mondays.

The 90s may edge ahead with the power ballads that ruled airwaves, think of Hero by Mariah Carey, I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston, Always by Bon Jovi, and Everything I Do by Bryan Adams. The 80s strikes back with Don’t Stop Believing by Journey and Total Eclipse Of The Heart by Bonnie Tyler

The competition gets hotter with the challenge of songs from the movies which covers everything from the 80’s Dirty Dancing, Footloose and Danger Zone; to Men In Black, Circle Of Life and Gangsta’s Paradise from the 90s.

How will the icons from the 70s who made it big in the 80s take on the icons from the 80s who made it big in the 90s? Will Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones match up to Bruce Springsteen, and how will Cher and Diana Ross shape up against Madonna and Tina Turner?

Presenting the music from these dueling decades are Ruan Geldenhuys, Ray Oberholzer, Zakariyah Toerien, Chrystal Worship and Elizca Coetzer on vocals; backed up by Jason Guile (guitar and vocals), James Dobson (keyboards and vocals), Romeo Moalusi (bass guitar) and Brian Fraser (drums).

Tickets are R140 per person from Wednesday to Saturday, with discounted specials of R105 per person every Tuesday night and R95 per person for the Sunday matinee show.
