Capitals trounce Super Giants in Durban

Durban’s Super Giants fall to their third defeat of the Betway SA20 competition.

DURBAN’S Super Giants fell to a heavy eight wicket loss to the Pretoria Capitals in the Betway SA20 at Kingsmead Stadium on Friday night.

The Durban crowd turned up in their numbers to support Quinton de Kock and his side, however they were unable to gain any momentum through their batting innings which meant the visitors had to chase just 81 to win the match.

Heinrich Klaasen was the lone warrior and top scorer with 31 for the home team, however, the Super Giants never gathered any momentum.

The last four wickets of the innings fell for the addition of just 14 runs as the Super Giants were bowled out for 80 in 18 overs.

Spinner Senuran Muthusamy was the pick of the Capitals bowlers with figures of 3/12 in his four overs while Wayne Parnell, Eathan Bosch and Anrich Nortje took two wickets apiece.

The Capitals innings started in the best possible way for the Super Giants as Mayers picked up a wicket off the first ball of the innings, Phil Salt caught at mid-off.

From then on though, Will Jacks smashed a 22-ball half century to help his side reach that target in just under eight overs.

Super Giants all-rounder Wiaan Mulder was frank in his assessment of the performance from the home side.

“I don’t think that we applied ourselves well tonight and if you lose three wickets in the powerplay you will always be on the back foot,” Mulder said. “I think the obvious answer is that we didn’t bat well but I think we just didn’t apply ourselves well at all.

“We have to get our intensity up and I think that is where we were lacking today and if you are on the back foot when the ball is swinging and nipping around that’s when you give away soft wickets.”

Despite the disappointing performance with the bat, Mulder knows the side won’t dwell on the result going into the rest of the competition.

“Going forward, I don’t think it’s anything technical or a mental thing; I think it’s just one of those moments in cricket where we have to be better than what we produced. I think we just have to take the upcoming games by the horns and move forward.”

The Super Giants head to Gqeberha where they will play the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in their sixth match of the competition on Sunday, 22 January.

Final Scores:

Durban’s Super Giants: 80/10 (18.1)
Pretoria Capitals: 84/2 (7.4)
