Free karate lessons on offer in uMhlanga and surrounds

Karate has also taken him to various parts of the world such as Portugal, Dubai, Polland, India, Ethiopia and Switzerland.

“IT’S a discipline, a lifestyle, and a sport, all in one,” says Sudhir Balli, a third Dan black belt in karate, who is offering a free trial for anyone who wants to join his dojo in one of the north Durban areas.

Balli said his mom enrolled him in karate when he was five years old.

“I was overweight and naughty. I also had no confidence, and I was bullied because I was overweight,” he said.

Now, 24 years later, Balli can’t imagine his life without karate. “I opened the dojo when I was 16 years old and still at school. I used to teach little children at crèche. The children looked up to me as a role model and even drew pictures saying they wanted to be like Sensei. That’s what I want to achieve. I want to change children’s lives,” he said.

He currently has dojos in areas such as Ballito, Salt Rock, Simbithi, Ottawa, Phoenix, Mount Edgecombe, The Bluff, and Malvern, where the free trials are available.

Balli is also a TV presenter on 5 Colour Fitness which is a fitness show on DSTV, Supersport Variety 4, Channel 209.

“I also have my Protea Colours and coached the Durban University of Technology karate team,” he added.

“Karate is a discipline. There’s more to it than just fighting. It’s a way of life. There are principles that karate teaches you, such as dedication and motivation, which you end up instilling in your everyday life,” he added.

“Karate unlocked potential that I didn’t know I had,” said Balli.
