Marine Series to kick-start 2020 surfski calendar

Over the years the Marine Series has moulded itself into an event that is appealing to all levels of paddlers due to the introduction of the short course, the easy launch into the Durban bay and the high quality of the safety provided.

THE popular Marine Surfski Series kicks off at Marine Surf Lifesaving Club this Friday and race organisers expect the 2020 format to resonate with paddlers both young and old.

The ten-leg series will once again attract paddlers of varying abilities and organisers have accommodated all levels of paddler by providing a 4km short course as an alternative to the 8km long course race.

Race organiser Barry Lewin is passionate about the series and surfski paddling in Durban and feels that the Marine Series is the perfect way to either get into surfski paddling or enhance your love for the sport.

“The series has gone through some tremendous growth over the last eight years since Marine Lifesaving Club as hosts moved into their new club, providing an ideal venue to showcase the sport to newcomers and the existing surfski community,” Lewin said.

“The series is one of the best ways to kick off your weekend after a long hard week as nothing beats smashing out a paddle and then spending some time with your mates in the club afterwards. As a club and organizing committee we have put together another exciting series for 2020. In the planning we have gone back to the series mission statement and really looked at putting on a great experience for our paddlers, families and spectators alike.”

The first race of the 2020 series takes place at Marine SLC at 5:30 on Friday 10 January.
