Expanded programme for Ocean Heroes competition

The expanded day's programme will start at 8am with a 1,5km surf swim, followed at 9am by a 4km malibu board race.

INTO its sixth year the AdReach Ocean Heroes surf IronMan competition returns to Durban’s North Beach on Sunday, 8 September which an expanded programme of events.

Billed as ‘Super Sunday’, the spectator-friendly event has been attracting the attention of more and more athletes since its inception in 2014, leading series organiser Wade Krieger to expend the day’s racing programme to include a Malibu board race, a ski race and a swim to compliment the main Enduro races.

The expanded day’s programme will start at 8am with a 1,5km surf swim, followed at 9am by a 4km malibu board race.

The Enduro races for men and women start at 10am and will consists of a surf swim, surfski paddle, a pier run and then a final board leg into the finish in front of the Durban Surf Lifesaving clubhouse.

Last years winner, Connor Botha, narrowly beat the experienced South African Surf Ironman Champion Luke Nisbet and is feeling excited about defending his title.

“It makes me work harder knowing I have a target on my back and that people want to take that title from me.” said Botha, adding that he is not focussed on his competition “as everyone on that line is capable of taking out the title.”

In the womens’ race, reigning champion and Durban North resident, Alice Edwards is focused on defending her title. “My preparation has been quite good leading up to the event as I’ve also been training for the International Surf Rescue Challenge which is based in Durban this year in October,” says Edwards.
