Jess aims for indoor hockey world cup selection

THE 2022 indoor hockey world cup may be three years away, but it is a goal Durban North resident, Jess Lardant is working towards. The star player was recently part of the Emerging South Africa Indoor side that played exhibition matches against Zimbabwe, Botswana and the SPAR South Africa team at the SPAR Indoor Series held at Danville Park Girls’ High Indoor Centre.

Lardant, who was part of the senior team set-up earlier this year on their successful European Tour where they defeated Switzerland and drew with Czech Republic, was one of the star players in the series for the Emerging SA side.

“I think this was the first time an emerging SA team played international opponents but it was a fantastic opportunity and one I was extremely grateful for. After making the senior team and being in the set-up this was a great chance to grow my game and link up with new combinations. I did manage to score a goal or two in the series but I felt overall we gelled well and playing the SA team for me highlighted the depth we have at an indoor level.

“I found this hugely beneficial for me as I’m working towards the goal of being selected for the senior team ahead of the 2022 World Cup. It was a chance for me to step-up and prove myself,” the Varsity College Durban North student said.

Lardant is currently playing for the Ceramic Industries Wineland Wings in the Premier Hockey League and has continued to impress.
