World Champs on the horizon for De la Porte

The 18 year-old former Clifton College pupil set himself some tough goals for 2018 and following a busy start to the year he is happy when reflecting on what he has achieved so far.

FOLLOWING a frantic middle part of the year where he raced extensively in Europe, Mount Edgecombe triathlete Ben de la Porte is back home and preparing for the upcoming ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, the world championships, in Gold Coast city in September.

The 18 year-old former Clifton College pupil set himself some tough goals for 2018 and following a busy start to the year he is happy when reflecting on what he has achieved so far.

“Up to now, my year has gone really well. I have achieved most of the goals which I set out at the beginning of the year. My season started off at KZN champs in January, followed by the Cape Town World Cup which was my first international race of the year. I then had SA Champs, where I managed to win the junior men, followed by Africa Champs in Morocco where I tied for the win – my goal was to win both of these races. My final few races have been in Europe where I raced six races in five weeks, my goal was to come in the top 10 in every race which I managed to do and came third in my final individual race.”

With a World Championship’s coming up in the near future, De la Porte hasn’t cast his mind too far into the future, however he does have long-term goals that he is focused on.

“I have just had a break as I was exhausted when I returned from Europe. I started training again recently so my focus is entirely geared towards being fit and healthy for World Champs. I have been working closely with Prime over the last few years and I want to get myself onto the WTS Circuit and from there I want to be able to go to the Olympic Games one day,” he said.
