Green adds his wife to Giant’s Cup plans
Last year was the first time that the seasoned trail runner made the trip to the Southern Drakensberg to take on the Giant’s Cup.
THIRD place finisher at last year’s Giant’s Cup, Travis Green, will be back for another crack at the 62km, two day race. This year he will have his wife Fiona on the start line too when the race kicks off on Friday 18 May.
Last year was the first time that the seasoned trail runner made the trip to the Southern Drakensberg to take on the Giant’s Cup and he was so impressed by the running of the event that he was quick to enter this year’s edition.
“Last year I saw an advert in the Trail Magazine and that is how I entered and was blown away by the whole set up and the quality of the trails,” Green said.
“The race also fits well into my running programme and my wife was also keep to do it this year so we didn’t hesitate to get our entries in. It is quite a small field but I guess that makes it easier for the organisers to look after the individual and staying each night in a different hotel just adds to the appeal.”

The ‘serious amateur’ as he refers to himself, will be in line for another strong finish at this year’s event with the tough climbs that signal the beginning of the end of each stage not phasing him too much at the moment.
“I always back myself to do well if there aren’t too many elite guys on the start line. I came third last year and will hopefully repeat something similar to that this year,” the 44 year old said.
“I have been trail running for a long time now so I think I understand the importance of power hiking and not thinking too far ahead. Understanding where my strengths and weaknesses lie is important and I think that I am good on the inclines so I am not too worried about the climbs – I’ll think about them when I get there.”
Green’s wife was quick to jump on the Giant’s Cup bandwagon for 2018 and he has been trying to guide Fiona through her preparation for the event.
“She is a good recreational runner and has done quite a bit of road running but I got her on the trails recently. I have also been helping her a bit in her training and preparation for the event,” an enthusiastic Green commented.
