Excitement builds ahead of KZN champs

Prestondale resident, Glen Gore, is organising the provincial championships over the run/bike/run format.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Duathlon Championships (run/bike/run) will take place on Sunday, 20 May at Midmar Dam. Prestondale resident, Glen Gore, is organising the provincial championships over the run/bike/run format starting from 7am.

“The event does not only cater for the top athletes but is open to all entrants as a fun event. What we are also doing this year is putting on an event especially for the 9 to 12 year age bracket. We see a huge gap in the market with plenty of youngster looking for events that cater for their respective age categories.

“This age group will race over a distance of a 1.25km run/5km cycle/1.25km run format. What makes this race even better is the fact that the entire race course takes place inside the confines of the Midmar Dam Resort which will ensure a safer course for all entrants. All types of athletes, fast or slow are welcome and they can race on any bikes (BMXs , mountain bikes and road bikes). The emphasis here is on having some fun.

“We have an additional three events on offer come race day. The youth division (12 years to 15 years) will compete over a race course of a 2.5km run/followed by a 10km cycle/followed by a 1.25km run. Once again this event takes place inside the grounds of the dam resort.

Next up is the Sprint Distance event which is open to all – 5km run/20km cycle/2.5km run and finally, the Standard Distance (open to all) which comprises a 10km run/40km cycle/5 run”

Gore added Midmar Dam will also play host to the SA Duathlon Championships on 1 July, on the same race course as the KZN Duathlon Championships.

A provincial team will be selected at the event on 20 May to compete in the SA Champs in July.

“We are hoping to grow the sport of duathlon in KZN and SA which is essentially a winter sport and hope to attract a fresh wave of new entrants to come and compete for fun. The youngsters are encourages to get their family to bring them along and give it a go,” he said.
