Durban Ultra Sprint event looking to attract triathlon newbies

Recreational and aspiring triathletes who missed the cut-off date can not register to take part in the sprint event.

THE MiWayLife Durban Ultra Triathlon organisers have agreed to take late entries for the Sprint event as recreational and aspiring triathletes are probing ways to get involved in the event.

Race director Damian Bradley confirmed that the entries for the elite Ultra event, which will be doubling as the SA Ultra Triathlon Championships for 2018, are good, but confirmed that he had been getting  calls from athletes keen to take on the shorter Sprint event, but missed the  entry cut-off date.

The Sprint event, which can be raced as an individual or in a team with a different athlete taking on a leg of the triathlon, consists of a 600m swim, a 20 km cycle and a 5km run.

Late entries will be taken at race registration at the Sunkist Lawns the beachfront in front of the Moses Mabhida stadium from 9am to 4pm on Saturday 3 March until the cap of 800 athletes is reached. A race briefing will be held at 4pm on Saturday, registration day.

Social athletes that don’t have a Triathlon SA licence can buy a day licence for R30.

The new race hub on the Durban beachfront has been designed to focus all the race attention on one central area, making it ideal for supporters and spectators and offering convenient parking at Kings Park Pool, Beachfront, Suncoast and Pirates and amenities on site.

Road closures for the cycle leg, which is a 20km route up and back on the M4 to the Glenore off-ramp for the Sprint event, and to the Umdloti bridge turning point for the Ultra athletes 90km cycle leg, will be familiar to local road users as the route is the same as the Tour Durban Cycle route segment.

The Ultra event, which ash attracted many of the sports household names eager to test themselves and challenge for the national titles, consists of a 1,9km swim, a 90km cycle leg and a 21km run.
