Henri loves super league triathlon

Formats of the competition varied over the three days, with the orders of swim/bike/run being swopped frequently and taking the world’s best athletes out of their comfort zones.

AFTER a health scare at the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon Union (ITU) which saw Durban North resident, Henri Schoeman, finish 10th, the 24-year-old took on a mammoth assignment of competing in the Super League Triathlon on Hamilton Island in Australia. The Olympic bronze medalist said he felt honoured to be invited to the league, a new innovation in the sport of triathlon.

Formats of the race varied over the three days, with the orders of swim/bike/run being swopped frequently and taking the world’s best athletes out of their comfort zones. Distances were 300 metres of swimming, 6km of biking and 2km of running. There was also an individual cycling time trial thrown in on day two.

Despite finishing 11th in the final standings with 25 points, Schoeman was thrilled his results.

“It was really exciting to be part of the Super League Triathlon. It was great racing over many different formats, loved every bit. It was an honour to be part of the event and it certainly was one of the most interesting and intense racing I’ve ever raced.

“I’d like to extend a massive thanks to the crew for their hard work putting up the stage and making this work and to the organisers for coming up with this brilliant game changing series. Although I was still struggling from a viral infection since Abu Dhabi my body just wasn’t 100 per cent there. At the end I came through strong. I’m now going to New Plymouth and then the Gold Coast for the World Triathlon Series thereafter,” he said.
