So What’s your question? Why this world class sailor hates driving near taxi ranks…

Getting to know Rudy McNeill.

TOP South African sailor, Rudy McNeill has just returned from competing in Canada with the hopes of qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Representing Point Yacht Club, the highly competitive sailor and Durban North resident is preparing to take on the international field in Miami in his dreams of competing at the Olympics.

What things don’t you like doing? Name two:

I don’t like cycling at early hours of the morning when it’s freezing. I don’t like driving near taxi ranks.

Tell us about a time when things didn’t go the way you wanted:

In 2007 in Dubai, going into the final race with a four-point lead on the second boat. If my opponent won the race I would have to finish third or better to retain the title. I had a terrible start, was well down the fleet with my opponent in first. I caught up to third place with two legs to go and at the last mark one guy overtook me, resulting in me getting a fourth-place finish. I finished tie on points but lost on the count-back.

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?

Sailing and all the work I need to do on that day.

What’s your strongest memory of your childhood?

I had a wonderful childhood with so many memories so it’s hard to name one.

What do you dislike about South Africa?

Corruption – there is almost nothing we can do about it but still gets to me.

What makes you angry?

Taxi drivers, no need to say any more…

Besides your job, what are you most passionate about?

Sailing, it’s a way of life for me, it’s what I’ve grown up with and love doing.

Name one misconception you think people have about you?

I’m pretty easy to read from the get-go, so I’m not sure about this one.

Some advice to people who want to follow your path; what are three things you should never do in this business?

Never give up; never stop having fun; never forget why you started in the first place.

What do you envision yourself doing when you turn 80?

Retired in an exotic, beautiful country with my wife.
