Re- opening of Tourism in Durban

Ushaka has re-opened and Audrey advised me telephonically that all activities are available.  As you know, this is a haven for children and families of all ages and some activities to highlight are – The Dolphin Show, Seal Show, Penguin Viewing and Snorkel lagoon.

Sun Coast Casino is now open to rewards programme members and it is easy to sign up.  It is also promoting the Spin to Win, every Monday from 10h00 until 17h00. The Barnyard Theatre is currently showcasing the 80’s Rewind Concert, running until 24 October.

Beaches

Although central Durban Beaches are closed, the beauty of Durban is that all surrounding areas and many hidden gems are highly accessible – beaches that remain safe and are ideal to visit are Pipeline beach, Amanzimtoti main beach, Warner beach, Winkelspruit beach, Reunion beach and Umgababa beach.

There are many other attractions, besides the beach – take a leisurely cycle along Durban’s famous promenade, which has been extended and runs from The harbour entrance to Umgeni River Mouth.  Popular activities include skateboarding and the skate park, and experience the thrill of a traditional Rickshaw Ride, an experience totally unique to Durban.

Focus on Umhlanga’s 60-year-old beacon of light

One of the world’s most iconic lighthouses is without a doubt the uMhlanga Lighthouse.

Lighthouses have towered across many beaches throughout the globe for centuries, warning sailors of fog, reefs, rocks and other dangers along the coastline. These silent, but bright, guardians are celebrated annually on 7 August.

Here are seven things you might not have known about the uMhlanga Lighthouse:

The uMhlanga lighthouse was completed in 1954

Construction was completed in four days and 19 hours.

The fixed red light enables ships waiting to anchor in the outer anchorage, to monitor its position. If the red light is undetectable, it suggests the ships anchors have probably dragged and is too close to shore.

The construction of the lighthouse cost R23 838.

There are 95 steps to the top of the uMhlanga Lighthouse
