Celebrate diversity

Reader calls on residents to be more tolerant.

Editor

I READ through the pages of the Northglen News, appalled at the repeated articles on violent crime, with many of the victims elderly, helpless folk. I would rather we united and fought this scourge of crime than create a brouhaha over Diwali celebrations held on one day per year.

The Group Areas Act was a divisive policy that thwarted cultural, ethnic and religious integration. The advent of democracy has warranted tolerance of each other’s cultural and religious beliefs, which is, alas, beyond some who hanker for life under the old regime. Responsible pet owners take it upon themselves to sedate their animals on this day.

Anyone who proclaims to be an animal rights activist need only trace the origins of the filet mignon on their plates. No, that beautiful creature was not sung a lullaby before it’s life came to a premature end.
Let’s come together and unite against the real evils that plague our society rather than bicker over a day of celebration. The true beauty of our nation lies in our diversity.
