Reader says tenant discrimination persists

After a white employee phoned the organisation, he was informed that low cost housing was available to all people by use of a means test, regardless of race.

I WRITE this letter to bring attention to an important issue. The year 1994 ushered in a new era for South Africa when parliamentary sovereignty was replaced by a democratically-elected government. In 1996, SA instituted the new Constitution, which ushered in the Bill of Rights. It is this Bill of Rights which is meant to bring dignity to all.
Notwithstanding the above, we still have in our midst people, whom I prefer to term modern-day Judases.
Just like Judas, they have betrayed what Mandela stood for with a false kiss. Last week, I made enquiries with an organisation about low-cost accommodation on behalf of my cousin in the Umgeni Park area. I was pushed from pillar to post.

After a white employee phoned the organisation, he was informed that low cost housing was available to all people by use of a means test, regardless of race. After I e-mailed a member of the organisation, I was told that they are not part of the hospitality industry.
After I e-mailed back, explaining that I had confirmed that accommodation was available, I received a further e-mail from the chairperson who stated contrary to what I was informed previously – that there was no space available and that accommodation was only for members of the organisation.

The Rental and Housing Act prohibits discrimination against tenants on any ground.
I have therefore lodged a complaint with the requisite state bodies. I hope to see a society wherein people are not judged by race or how much they have.
