Holding thumbs for Blue Flag Beach status

Durban is poised to increase its Blue Flag beaches in the next few years.

IT has been a few weeks since the closing date for Blue Flag Beach applications.

The successful beaches will be decided on fairly soon, and they will be officially announced in October. eThekwini has applied for two beaches, this year – uShaka and Westbrook Beach.

Like many of Durban’s beaches, these two are well-appointed and well-patronised. So it is likely that we will increase our Blue Flag beaches in the next few years.

It will be fitting that eThekwini – the first SA municipality to get a Blue Flag beach at Durban’s South Beach in 2002 (with Mayor Obed Mlaba and city manager, Mike Sutcliffe, proudly raising the Blue Flag) – should be re-joining the scheme after our ignominious resignation in 2008.

I’m sure our local tourists and the few foreign ones who squeeze through our immigration minefield will appreciate the high standards that the municipality has achieved at our beaches.

Now the ball is in our court. Enjoy our beaches and look after them.
