‘Monkey business’ in Umgeni Park

The authorities should intervene to control monkeys.

Editor

THERE is a large troop of monkeys (30 to 40 have been counted) in the Umgeni Park area which utilise the overhead telephone cables to move from place to place. Since early 2015 they have made this area their home, and we have to put up with them every day.

Most aggravating is the breaking of telephone-line links from pole to house (as Telkom takes time to do repairs so we are subject to internet/telephone outages), and breaking gutters and tiles. No windows or doors may be left open, and with all the dogs in the area yapping for hours on end until they decide to move on is all but peaceful.

No nesting birds in the area can survive, and since this invasion the absence of birds is very noticeable. I honestly believe it is now time for the authorities (whoever they may be) to intervene, as I am afraid that owners in this area may consider other means of curbing this menace, which may be unlawful and cannot be condoned. I also believe that a contributing factor to the problem is ill-informed people feeding them with scraps from the kitchen – or are these stolen as a result of open doors or windows?
