Driving like maniacs in Durban

EDITOR – What has happened to drivers in Durban? Everyone is so impatient that they are willing to put other lives at risk to drive like maniacs!

I drive on the M4 between Durban and Durban North daily, and am constantly amazed at the bad driving skills and manners of fellow road-users.

The M4 is a 100km/h zone, yet many drivers seem to think it is a free-for-all, driving 120km and faster on this small two-lane highway. I am constantly being ‘forced’ into the slow lane by luxury sedan drivers, who think the law doesn’t apply to them.

And heaven forbid you should leave a safe following distance, as someone will take the gap and cut you off! If you don’t move over fast enough, even though you are indicating, these drivers will overtake you on the left, without indicating, and cut in front of you.

Everyone always complains about the taxi drivers, but it is not just them. It is Durban drivers in general and I’m sick of it!

Where is the police presence and why aren’t they monitoring our roads? During the world cup and other international events there was a huge police presence on the M4, and the drivers were so well behaved!

If that’s all it takes to get drivers to obey the laws of the road and drive like sane people, then why can’t there be a stronger police presence all the time? It would help avoid unnecessary road accidents and even save lives.
