Effective road rule enforcement vital

Until effective and strict enforcement of our road and traffic regulations is made a reality, we will continue to experience senseless and unnecessary carnage on our roads. Users of our roads, both owners of vehicles and their drivers, must be brought to book regarding the roadworthiness of vehicles and the actions of drivers. DaveB

EDITOR – The two recent horrific accidents, claiming at least 32 lives, has prompted this letter.

Last Tuesday evening, while traveling between PMB and Durban on the N3, after sunset, I past at least 10, 18 wheeler horse-and-trailers, and a number of smaller vehicles, whose tail and other lights were defective, or in some cases, not working at all.

If something as fundamental as the lighting system of a vehicle is out-of-order, there seems a good possibility that there could be other defects with the vehicle, or the licencing of the vehicle and driver, that would make it un-roadworthy.

Nowhere on the trip did I see any sign of traffic enforcement authorities.
