Vegetarian choices limited

EDITOR – One thing about living in uMhlanga Rocks, at least where my wife and I stay, we can walk to at least 70 pubs, restaurants and takeaways which is hugely convenient.

What isn’t so convenient is the fact that most of the establishments in the village do not cater properly for vegetarians. A glance at any of the menus will show that only about one percent of the items on offer are vegetarian.

We are certainly not saying the establishments in question should radically alter their menus to suit us, but why not at least make a decent attempt to cater for these people? Nothing special would be needed, just have the ingredients at hand, which generally are used for other dishes anyway, and place them on the menu.

As things stand, if you ask for something vegetarian, you are given such a bad choice with a slight rolling of the eyes sky-ward, that you feel quite embarrassed to even broach the subject. I remember trying to book a Valentine’s Evening meal at a very well known restaurant in The Village, they had a set menu for the event, but when I asked if they could cater for my vegetarian wife, they said, “Well, we could give her a pizza!”

Bearing in mind that the restaurant was an expensive establishment, I thought that that just wasn’t good enough! Come on restaurants in uMhlanga, time to up your game and make the effort to look after vegetarians!
