On the evening of 28 June, we were held up at gunpoint and robbed. Fortunately, my wife and I were not injured, but the thugs shot and killed our best friend, Max, our Boxer.

After they had left and the police arrived, we were left with the dilemma of removing the body, which by then, was lying in a large pool of blood on the kitchen floor.

With the assistance of the ADT security officer and a member of the police crisis team, Lindsay, who made a number of telephone calls, it was eventually arranged for Klaus Schoeman, the owner of Ashburne Veterinary Clinic, to come to our home at what must have been well after 8pm.

Klaus proceeded to remove the body and with some help from another police trauma counsellor, Carol, and they cleaned the quite considerable mess in the kitchen.

Klaus then left on the basis that we could call around at a later stage when we felt ready, to settle with him.

As if he had not done enough to help us, the following morning he called at our home to see how we were and presented us with sustenance, knowing full well that we would not be up to going shopping. What an incredible man.
