AS mop-up operations continue across the province following torrential rainfall on Thursday evening, residents in Durban North, uMhlanga and the Greenwood Park areas have not reported any serious damage.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) one person has been confirmed dead following the severe weather conditions experienced yesterday.
In Durban North, a section of Malacca Road was once again covered in mounds of sand and mud.
Sections of Riverside Road were also covered in large pools of water.
In Greenwood Park, and in particular Hedley Road, a property which sustained structural damage due to a burst pipe, was damaged even more by the heavy downpours.
The intense rains also led to disruptions to electricity supply in numerous communities.
Ward councillor, Bradley Singh, said there was no significant damage reported in Ward 35.
“Despite heavy rains during last night’s storm, residents reported no significant flooding or sewage overflows, a notable improvement compared to past events.”
Heinz de Boer, Ward 36 councillor, said the area also escaped serious damage.
“After the last heavy rains, we worked closely with the Roads and Stormwater Department to ensure any blockages to stormwater drains were cleared which I feel helped with stopping any significant flooding. Unfortunately, Umgeni Park which has been plagued with electricity outages, is again affected due to a medium voltage (MV) cable fault,” he said.
Meanwhile, the MEC for KZN Cogta, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, extended his condolences to the family of a woman who died after her vehicle was swept off a bridge in Pinetown.
“Search and Rescue teams successfully recovered both the vehicle and the deceased’s body in the early hours of Friday morning. A Level 4 warning is also still active for the remaining areas of the province. We urge all residents to heed the weather warnings and exercise extreme caution. These conditions pose a significant risk to human life and livestock,” Buthelezi said.
