SINCE 1975, it has been a tradition for Lions Clubs around the country to sell Lions Christmas Cakes.
This is no different for the North Durban Lions Club who are gearing up for the festive season with their annual tradition of selling Christmas cakes as part of their annual fundraising initiatives to fund their community work.
The local club are also selling the cakes in an effort to give back to the projects they’ve invested in.
Avril Hobbs from the club said the sale of the Christmas Cakes was not only a way to raise awareness about the organisation, it was also about putting community service at the heart of what they do.

“It’s an annual project and one of our best-supported ones. We sell out every year, and it goes down a treat. We’ve now been doing this for close to 50 years. The delicious 1kg cakes are already in a box and contain no alcohol. The cakes happen to be made in Durban, but they’re shipped throughout the country. There is no alcohol in the cakes, but many people opt to add their own alcohol to the cakes. You can buy a cake and keep it in your cupboard until Christmas,” she said.
Her son, Grant, who is a keen baker, is the convener of the cake sales and says he aims to sell close to 300 Christmas cakes this season.
“We’ve already had a few orders. Ultimately, this helps with funding our community projects, like our diabetes and sight screenings which we offer free to the public. We also run a monthly food-parcels initiative. We also welcome corporate orders. The cake is delicious and can be enjoyed on its own or with custard. We will also be selling the cakes at the Golden Hours market in the lead-up to Christmas,” he said.
The cakes, which cost R170, will be sold through the North Durban Lions website and Facebook page.
They are also on sale at Bernina on 5 Swapo Road.
