DURBAN North Police led a multi-pronged operation on Saturday, targeting illegal structures along the green belt at Virginia Beach as well as illegal dumping.

Durban North SAPS’s Colonel Pam Nair, the Visible Policing (Vispol) Commander, said she had been contacted by residents who had raised the alarm on the number of illegal dwellings and amount of illegal dumping in the area.

“This operation involved various departments, including the eThekwini Security Management Unit, DSW and the Parks Department, due to council land being used for illegal structures. Residents had also raised concerns about the potential growth of the structures in the green belt along the beaches. The eThekwini bodies also helped with the many homeless living in the bushes by assisting them with accommodation,” Nair said.

Chairperson of the Home Hawks Neighbourhood Watch Dale Nel said they were approached to move illegally dumped items from the green belt and Virginia Beach.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the watch said they worked closely with local council.
“We were able to help with cleaning and clearing the green belt between Virginia Beach and Virginia Airport of litter,” he said.
