Stolen items thrown during high-speed chase on M4

Law enforcement also recovered a stolen laptop and bag from a car at a service station on Umhlanga Rocks Drive in La Lucia.

TWO suspects were arrested on Thursday (October 10) last week for alleged theft cases across Durban, including in uMhlanga and La Lucia.

The arrest came just hours after the Durban North Police warned about an increase in thefts-out-of-motor-vehicle cases where remote jamming was suspected.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell, the suspects were caught red-handed attempting to break into another vehicle.

“Our Special Operations Team were on routine patrol in the Morningside area when they spotted a blue VW Polo at a well-known service station on Athlone Road. Our team observed the suspects attempting to break into a vehicle at the service station. The suspects spotted our officers and immediately sped off along Athlone Drive towards the M4.

“A high-speed pursuit followed, and during the chase, the suspects threw multiple car-breaking implements and other items from the vehicle in an attempt to evade capture. Despite their efforts, our officers successfully stopped the vehicle, apprehending two suspects inside. A search of the vehicle revealed a stolen laptop and bag, which were linked to a vehicle break-in at a well-known service station on Umhlanga Rocks Drive in the La Lucia area,” he said.

Powell added that it was later confirmed that the suspects were involved in multiple vehicle thefts across the greater Durban area, including Hillcrest, Malvern, Durban North, uMhlanga and Westville.

“The suspects had operated with a blue Polo, a silver Hyundai i10 and a Ford Figo in previous crimes,” he said.
