Support needed for Umhlanga Hindu Society’s Diwali hamper drive

This initiative is designed to bring joy and relief to families in need during the Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights.

THE Umhlanga Hindu Society (UHS) has launched its annual Diwali Hamper Drive to support local families in need.

This initiative is designed to bring joy and relief to families in need during the Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights.

Marlini Naidoo, seva convenor (charitable work) of the Diwali Hamper Drive said this is the largest project undertaken each year to bring joy and relief to families in need.

“Last year we made 2000 hampers and the aim of the hamper drive is to foster a sense of community, compassion and seeks to bring people together. For the UHS it is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of Diwali while also helping those in need and making a positive impact in the community.

“The drive aims to provide essential food items and other festive treats to underprivileged families. We believe in the power of community and the importance of sharing our blessings with those in need. Diwali is a time for all of us to come together and spread light and love, especially to those who may be facing difficult times.”

Two members of the youth within the UHS also outlined why the day is a special one.

Somerset Park resident Milan Sewdass said he supports the drive every year.

“Diwali is all about brining light to people and I feel it’s our duty to give back to those in need. We see the impact it has on people over the years. We do this to spark joy in other people,” Sewdass said.

Fellow UHS member and La Lucia resident, Theasan Naidoo echoed those sentiments.

“For me Diwali is not only a celebration but also a philosophy in life of bringing light into people’s lives. It is wonderful to give back to the community in whatever way we can,” Naidoo said.
