Durban North CPF warns of SAPS imposter asking for donations

The suspect has already targeted residents in Sunningdale with the fake letter asking for donations.

THE Durban North CPF has warned residents to be wary of a man purporting to be a member of the SAPS asking for cash donations for various causes.

According to the public relations officer for the CPF, Darryl Oliver, the man has also targeted the Sunningdale area recently, however, residents did not fall for the scam.

“The individual goes around, sometimes with a letter complete with a SAPS logo at the top. The letter is from a Captain Govender, whom he claims to be. He also has, in the past, claimed to be a Captain Naidoo and a pastor. The letter he presents claims to be for raising funds or collecting donations and asks for a donation of R20.

“Other variations of this scam include it being a social feeding scheme, sandwich drive or similar fundraising – there are also some slight variations to his rank or station. The man is neither a member of the SAPS nor authorised by them to conduct fundraising or food drives. We ask residents that should you encounter the suspect not to give him any money,” he said.

Oliver also urged the public to contact the CPF (063 643 7803) or station commander at the Durban North SAPS should they have any concerns regarding the authenticity of any SAPS letter.
