Glenashley school pays tribute to teen killed in Effingham attack

Mikai Chetty and his grandmother were stabbed multiple times in the attack and succumbed to their injuries.

THE community of Effingham are in mourning following the brutal murder of two people in a home on Sim Place last Wednesday morning (October 2).

Mikai Chetty (13) and his grandmother, Nadhira Essack, believed to be in her 70s, were stabbed multiple times in the attack which also saw a third woman, who also sustained serious injuries, being taken through to hospital.

Both Mikai and Essack succumbed to their injuries following the stabbings.

While the motive for the attack is unknown, Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell said the attack is ‘suspected to be domestic-related’.

Mikai’s school, Glenashley Preparatory School, offered their condolences following the attack. In a statement on their Facebook page, the school said Mikai was known for his ‘kindness, calm energy and unique spirit’.

“This loss has profoundly affected us all, and our hearts go out to Mikai’s family and friends during this time of immense grief. His presence brought warmth to our classrooms, and his absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt by everyone who knew him. As we mourn this loss together, we encourage our community to lean on one another for support,” the school statement read.

At the time of the stabbing, Marshall Security’s Powell said three people were found in the home with multiple stab wounds.

“Greenwood Park SAPS and a private ambulance service attended to an woman, approximately 50 years of age, who had sustained severe lacerations to her neck and arms. Tragically, in another room of the residence, paramedics and SAPS discovered an elderly woman and a teenage boy who had been severely injured. Both showed no signs of life and were pronounced deceased at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, but it is suspected to be domestic-related. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and will continue to support the police investigation,” he said.

No arrests have yet been made in the case, however, KZN Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the Greenwood Park SAPS are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.
