North Durban paddlers win silver medals at world champs

They also helped Team South finish tenth on the medal table at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships.

LOCAL paddlers, Saskia Hockly (Mount Moreland) and Christie Mackenzie (uMhlanga), claimed a silver medal in the women’s K2 race at the recent International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Marathon World Championships.

The event was held on the River Neretva in Metkovic, Croatia from September 19 to September 22.

The result helped Team South Africa claim a fifth silver medal at the championships which saw the country finished tenth on the medal table.

The silver medal for Hockly and Mackenzie also made up for the disappointment of withdrawing their respective K1 races earlier in the week.

The duo were bronze medal winners at last year’s world championships in the U23 (Hockly) and K1 (Mackenzie) races in Denmark.

The women’s K2 event was won by the Hungarian crew of Zsoka Csikos and Emese Kohalmi who powered away to a solid 31-second victory over Hockly and Mackenzie, while Sweden’s Melina Andersson and Ella Richter finished third.

It has been a busy few weeks for Hockly who recently represented the South African team at the Lifesaving World Championships (LWC) in Australia.

In the men’s K2 race, the South Africa crew of Uli Hart and Hank McGregor finished fifth while South African Olympians Andy Birkett and Hamish Lovemore (uMdloti) withdrew.

However, it wasn’t over for Lovemore who won a superb silver medal from the Short Course Senior Men’s K1 event.

The star of the champs for Team SA was undoubtedly Georgia Singe who ended with two silvers: one in the K1 Junior Women and one in the K2 Junior Women with Holly Smith. Uli Hart claimed a silver medal in the U23 K1.
