Make a sweet donation at north Durban malls

Registration to bake and participate in National Cupcake Day 4 Children with Cancer, is now open. The community can also support by buying cupcakes at participating malls on the day.

IF baking is on your list of favourite things to do, why not rope your family and friends into making a dozen or two of cupcakes for the Cupcakes of Hope fundraiser?

Bakers are asked to pledge 24 or more cupcakes. These are then sold at most major shopping malls across the country at a cost of R10 each on Saturday, September 28. Proceeds go towards assisting children with cancer.

For Durban North, participating malls include Cornubia Mall, La Lucia Mall and Gateway Theatre of Shopping.

Cornubia

Sindhera Avikaar, Cupcakes of Hope co-ordinator for Cornubia Mall, joined the national cupcake fundraising team in 2014 when her daughter needed to serve community work at school.

“Ever since then, my family and I have been a part of this great initiative. We have never looked back” she said.

“We feel so blessed to have this opportunity to make a difference in the children’s lives,” she added.

Avikar and her team are asking for a donation of 24 cupcakes to be dropped off at the mall at 08:00 on Saturday, September 28. Contact her on 083 570 1594.

La Lucia

Cheryl Samuel, who co-ordinates donations for La Lucia Mall, said a friend introduced her to Cupcakes of Hope.

“I knew I had to make a difference somewhere, somehow. My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2018. I have seen the side effects of chemo and radiation treatment, and it was just too heartsore watching Dad go through this. Through God’s grace, my dad is a stage 4 cancer survivor. He’s my absolute hero and the bravest warrior of faith I know. He is my reason for joining Cupcakes of Hope,” she said.

She said the aim of the fundraiser is not only to raise funds but to create awareness about childhood cancer.

“We need the love and support from our communities. Spread the word about Cupcakes of Hope. We appeal to the community to help us ‘bake a difference’ in the lives of our little warriors by pledging to bake 24 to 48 cupcakes and showing up to purchase cupcakes, too,” she added.

Cupcakes can be dropped off at the mall between 09:00 and 10:00.

“The purpose of this event is to raise awareness and funds for families in need of medical assistance. Supporting this event means that this is now possible,” she added.
