Durban North family gets ‘active’ for Cansa

All of the money raised via 8 Mile initiatives goes to charity – 80% to a charity of your choice and 20% to a group of chosen 8 Mile charities.

WHETHER you make it a fun day out, a teambuild or a family event, the Cansa Active Swimathon is a great cause to support.

Taking place at Northlands Primary on Saturday, November 9, the event forms part of fundraising for the Midmar 8 Mile Charity Challenge which requires participants to support a charity of their choice.

Father and daughter hosts, Ashleigh Clarke and Lance Fraser, have chosen to make it a family affair and have roped in just about every relative to take part. They are encouraging swimmers – families, business, schools, organisations and the like – to enter.

The Clan Fraser 8 Mile Swimmers chose CANSA Active as their beneficiary as they are passionate about making conscious health choices and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. There are various other charities that other Midmar swimmers support.

“It’s a fun event for anyone and everyone to enter. If you can swim for 30 minutes, that’s all you need to do. It’s not competitive at all, and how you choose to participate is up to you. You could do a relay or swim as an individual, but you have to be in the water for 30 minutes,” said Fraser.

Clarke added that CANSA and its fundraising teams are on the ground, constantly working hard to fundraise for the cause.

“Not only does the organisation do incredible work in promoting a healthy lifestyle but they also receive no funding from Government. We all know someone who is affected by cancer – be it directly or through a family member. If we band together, we can make a difference in the lives of many,” she added.

The family held its first Cansa Active Swimathon two years ago with the first event attracting 100 swimmers of all age groups. Last year, a total of 135 attended, and this year, they are hoping for increased community participation.

“Swimmers from all age groups attend, and it’s especially nice for the little ones get involved,” said Fraser.
The little ones who are unable to swim for the full 30 minutes are assisted by Lance and others as they help them around the pool.

“We chose Northlands Primary as the venue this year because it has a heated pool and the little children would benefit from that,” said Fraser.

Companies can also sponsor a lane and obtain a Section 18A Certificate from Cansa.
Food and beverages will be on sale on the day, and there will be raffles and spot prizes.
