DURBAN always delivers when it comes to stage productions, music concerts and markets. Get out and enjoy some of the events listed below for Heritage Month.

Black Lapels pay tribute to Van Morrisson (Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14)

The Black Lapels will perform a tribute show called Days Like This to Van Morrisson at the Rhumbelow Theatre (Northlands Bowling Club) on Friday, September 13, and Saturday, September 14, at 19:30. Spring It On in Glenwood! (Saturday, September 14)

The management and tenants at Glenwood Village are celebrating the change in season with a spring-themed family day on Saturday, September 14, hosting a free morning fashion show of women’s garments, children’s activities, cupcake-decorating sessions, storytelling in the library, an arts and crafts hub, live music and various tenant in-store promotions.

Tenants have been working together to offer a fun spring morning. The library will be hosting art lessons during the morning and storytelling sessions at 10:30 and 11:30 for children.

There will be a fashion show at 11:00 – with bespoke ladies’ garments from The Fifth 031 being modelled by women who work in the centre.

Durban’s own Gary McKenzie will be singing spring tunes and making visitors aware of activities and promotions taking place throughout the centre.

Entry is free, and all are welcome. Glenwood Village doesn’t charge for on-site parking, has guarded street parking and is easily accessible on public transport. For more information, contact 031 201 0137 (office hours).

Watch André Rieu on the big screen (Saturday, September 14, and Sunday, September 15)

The Rhumbelow Classics Cinema will showcase André Rieu’s 2024 Maastricht Concert, Power of Love, at the Rhumbelow Theatre on 42 Cunningham Road off Bartle Road on Saturday, September 14 – show starts at 19:00, and Sunday, September 15 – show starts at 14:00. The venue opens 90 minutes before the show for snacks/drinks, and the run time for the concert is 180 minutes (including an interval).

Tickets cost R150, and attendees are encouraged to bring food picnic baskets or buy at the venue.

Celebrate all things British (Sunday, September 15)

The British Cultural & Heritage Association presents Music en Masse 2024 – a participative and fun orchestral concert that aims to bring together musicians – anyone who can read and play music – of all ages and cultures in KZN – for a concert performed by ‘the biggest orchestra ever seen in Durban’. This will take place in the DLI Hall in Greyville on Sunday, September 15, at 14:30.

The concert has become an annual event – part of Durban’s musical calendar – featuring a public performance by a massed orchestra under the baton of Russell Scott, which aims to serve the interests of the arts, culture and musical education in Durban. The organisers are looking for participants to join in.

Tickets can be purchased at the door on the day or directly from the office before the event, between 09:00 and 13:00, at Berea Bowling Club – Corner of Brand and Ferguson – entrance in Ferguson Road. Tickets cost R100 for adults, R80 for pensioners and children U12 are R50.

Hamming it up at the British Culture and Heritage Association offices in Glenwood, ahead of Music en Masse, are KZN Philharmonic Musicians Graham Alexander (violin), Jonalene Taylor (double bass) and conductor Russell Scott.

Catch Rising Stars (Sunday, September 15)

The annual KZN Rising Stars Concert, featuring the top students of the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT), will take place on Sunday, September 15, at 14:30, at the Durban Jewish Centre (44 KE Masinga Rd, North Beach). The concert will feature clarinet, piano, saxophone, violin and voice. Tickets cost R80 and are available at the door. Future concerts and events to consider

Art lovers dream in uMhlanga (September 16 to September 29)

This September, Oceans Mall in uMhlanga will host, in partnership with the eThekwini Municipality and the Durban Art Gallery, the Oceans Art Expo, a vibrant celebration of art and culture that will turn heads and inspire.

The exhibition is a showcase of South Africa’s most brilliant local artists, crafters and fashion designers – all under one roof for two whole weeks.

This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating our Cultural Diversity in a Democratic South Africa’.

Mystery abounds in local play (September 19 to October 5)

Westville Theatre Club will present Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot or Holmes for the Holidays, the winner of the 2012 Edgar® Award for Best Play from The Mystery Writers of America.

Mystery and high hilarity in equal parts, set in the 1930s, this play tells the story of Broadway star William Gillette, who has invited his fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. Then it is up to Gillette himself, who just happens to think he is Sherlock Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears. The danger and laughter are non-stop in this glittering whodunit set during the Christmas holidays.

Directed by the talented duo, Jill Sysum and Maya Olsen.

The show takes place from Thursday, September 19, to Saturday, October 5.
The evening shows take place from September 19–21 and September 26–28 as well as from October 3–5. (Doors open at 18:30; curtains go up at 19:00.)
The matinee shows take place on September 22 and September 29. (Doors open at 14:00; curtains go up at 14:30.)
