Briardene toy drive needs you

Reddy and Van den Berg will also be calling on children to get involved in the fun day as they feel interaction between the children is key.

A GESTURE of donating a gently used or brand-new toy will have a lasting impact on the life of a child who has never received one before.

For this reason, two men from Durban North, Sam Reddy and Johann van den Berg, have collaborated to host a Durban North Kids Community Fun Day for the children and teenagers of Briardene.
They are calling on the community and business to join forces with them to make this event possible.

“Some of these children have never received a gift in their lives. We’re looking for pre-loved toys in working condition, or new, to give to a child. It’s a simple act of kindness that will put a smile on a child’s face,” said Reddy.
To assist the project, Reddy, together with Durban North Pharmacy, has planned a Women’s Holistic Health event where proceeds from the event will go towards the fun day.

“We’re collecting toys for all age groups – from toddlers to teens – so every child feels the love. We’re also looking at holding various programmes for the youth on the day pertaining to skills development and career choices. We want these children to know that there are opportunities for them out there,” he added.

Van den Berg is particularly close to the community of Briardene, having held a soup kitchen and other initiatives for its residents over the years.

He and Reddy are also looking for events companies to sponsor jumping castles and other entertainment activities for the children.

“We decided to hold this event ahead of Christmas so it’s non-denominational. Any child is welcome to attend, and we look forward to working with business and community sponsors to make this event possible,” he said.
Van den Berg added that the level of unemployment is high in Briardene, so much so that the youth don’t have support or a sense of direction.

“For many of these children, this is the only gift they will receive the entire year. The youth need mentorship so we’re calling on people to give their time and advice, as well. We are also looking for donations of stationery – new or remaining,” he added.

The event takes place on November 30 at Briardene Sports Ground from 10:00 to 14:00.
