Four Comrades board members resign with immediate effect

Two of the resignations include the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Comrades Marathon Association board.

FOUR members of the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) have resigned with immediate effect, including the CMA chair, Mqondisi Ngcobo, and vice-chair Leslie Burnard.

The two other members are Kerwin Basson and Pumlani Ntuli.

The resignations come a week after the association held a Special General Meeting in Pietermaritzburg where one of the board members was banned for life.

In June this year, Ann Ashworth stepped down from her role as the Comrades Marathon Race and Operations Manager.

Ngcobo, who resigned as chairperson, said the past few weeks have ‘taken a toll’ on members of the association.

“I am very grateful to the CMA Board, staff, sponsors and volunteers who have supported the work of the association in what has been some stressful circumstances. The past few weeks have taken a toll on the members of the association, and I empathise with those who have been at the coalface dealing with these issues.”

“The CMA and the race are in a very good space, and it is with this in mind that we will be stepping down from the CMA Board to spend some much-needed downtime to be with our families and to allow the association to evolve. We wish all stakeholders, members and, most importantly, the runners everything of the best for the future.”

Jeff Minnaar, Peter Proctor and CMA Member Busani Ndlovu have been appointed as Appointee Board Members onto the CMA Board as per Clause 21.4 of the CMA Constitution.

Minnaar has been appointed as the interim chairperson, while Peter Proctor will serve as the interim vice-chairperson until the Annual General Meeting is held in November this year.
