Beware of fake website pretending to be Northglen News

A post emerged on Facebook asking users to click on a link which then redirected them to the site.

SEVERAL readers have brought to our attention a comment circulating on our Facebook page, asking users to click on a link to enter the Durban Virginia Air Show competition.

The comment is posted by a fake Facebook page, using the Northglen News’ logo as a profile picture with only one follower.

The comment states that the reader has won the competition and asks them to click on the link that is provided in the comment.

The fake Facebook account user notifying a reader they have won the competition. This is a scam.

Once users click on the link, they are directed to a fake website, saying they have received a gift from Northglen News and that a credit card is required to verify their data.

“Readers are under the impression that they have won tickets to the Durban Virginia Air Show. While the competition link provided on our original Facebook page is legitimate, the link posted by the fake account user is a scam. We urge our readers to not click on any suspicious links. The Northglen News is a news website that publishes free, hyperlocal content for our readers. We will never ask you for credit card details. Please be extra cautious,” said editor, Corrinne Louw.

The fake account has been reported to Facebook and has been blocked by Northglen News admin.
