Quicksand event crowns champs

NKOSIKHONA Mhlakwana (31) and Dayna Deedle (18) took home the men’s and women’s title at this year’s Red Bull Quicksand event held on the Durban beachfront.

The beach obstacle course, which covers a distance of 1.5km, saw athletes from various backgrounds eager to test their limits against nature’s toughest terrain – sand.

According to the organisers, the course is designed to be 1.6 times harder to run on than standard surfaces.

“I’m feeling over the moon after winning the Red Bull Quicksand race. This was my first time participating in the event, and to come away with a win feels incredible. It was a challenging 1.1km course, but I’m honoured and happy to have come out on top. Congrats to all the participants and the other winners – it’s a fantastic competition, and I’m thrilled to have been part of it,” said Mhlakwana.

Deedle, who was defending her title from last year, said the win would stand her in good stead for the upcoming Lifesaving World Champs down under.

“This was my second year at Red Bull Quicksand, and it was definitely tougher than last year. The route was more challenging, and the heat really tested us. But it’s such an awesome event, and I’ll definitely be back next year to defend my title,” she said.

Course designer Thomas van Tonder also commended the athletes on their achievements.

“The energy was electric, and the vibe was incredible. The course really tested us – it was a beast with all the tough obstacles and shifting sand, which is exactly what we crave as OCR athletes. The perfect weather just added to the fun. I’m already looking forward to the next race and pushing even harder.
