Getting arty in La Lucia for animal rescue charity

The North Coast Artists club has been raising funds for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) Durban for about 20 years through bi-annual exhibitions held at the La Lucia Mall.

THE North Coast Artists have done it again, raising an impressive R18 399 for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) Durban through their mid-year exhibition at La Lucia Mall.

Jenny Smith, who is the co-ordinator for the exhibition, said the art club has been raising funds for the animal welfare organisation for about 20 years now as animals are very dear to the artists.

“The Animal Anti-Cruelty League Durban is one of the few organisations that doesn’t euthanise animals and rather opts to take care of them for life. As animal lovers, we support them in this decision as the number of abandoned animals rises daily,” said Smith.

The mid-year exhibition, which took place in July this year, saw about 46 exhibitors showcase magnificent pieces. A total of 63 paintings were sold, and 50% of the sales were donated to the AACL Durban. This is one of the two exhibitions held at the mall for the AACL with the second taking place in December.

Artwork varied across numerous themes from animals to flowers and much more. There was also a painting that went on raffle during the 12-day period, which added to the proceeds.

Cindene Sheasby, marketing manager for La Lucia Mall, said the mall has always enjoyed hosting the North Coast Artists and is supportive of their cause of helping animals in need.

“The exhibition also brings people to the mall, and it’s great to see shoppers enjoying browsing through the art. We have a lot of inquiries from shoppers about the exhibition, so it is something that locals look forward to, as well,” said Sheasby.

David Rogers, CEO of AACL Durban, thanked the artists for their tremendous support over the years.

“This gives us a sense of encouragement to carry on doing the work that needs to be done to make sure our animals are safe. Our focus is not only on rescuing abandoned animals but also on sterilisation drives and education campaigns,” he said.
