Copper cable thefts lead to arrest of two suspects in two separate incidents

One of the arrests was made in Effingham while a second arrest was made in Greenwood Park just hours later.

A SUSPECTED copper cable thief has been arrested after he was found in possession of approximately 2m of copper cables.

The suspect was detained and later handed over to Greenwood Park Police on Firwood Road after a resident noticed the suspect allegedly stealing the cable.

Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell said they were alerted to the incident through a WhatsApp community group just after 04:00 on Wednesday morning (August 14).

“We received an alert regarding a copper cable theft in progress on Belmont Road. Our officers were dispatched to the scene and pursued and apprehended a suspect on Firwood Road. A search revealed that the suspect was in possession of approximately 2m of copper cable; the stolen copper was promptly recovered. The suspect was subsequently handed over to Greenwood Park SAPS where he was charged with copper cable theft,” he said.

Powell also commended the alert resident who reported the copper cable theft.

Highlighting the recent spike in copper theft, just a few hours later, a suspect was arrested on Park Station Road in Greenwood Park at about 08:45.

“We received a panic button activation from a business – we were informed by the business owner that a suspect was at the rear of the premises, attempting to steal copper pipes. We proceeded to the rear of the premises and apprehended the suspect before any further damage could be done. The suspect was later handed over to Greenwood Park SAPS where he will be charged with copper theft and trespassing,” he said.
