NEXT year’s Durban International Marathon is set to be bigger and more exciting than ever. The organisers have revealed the date for the fifth edition of the marathon: Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Viewed as a launching pad for both local and international talent, the Durban International Marathon has gained a reputation for propelling runners forward.
Former winners, such as Lesotho’s Tebello Ramakongoana and Zimbabwe’s Isaac Mpofu, as well as South Africans Cian Oldknow and Elroy Gelant, are prime examples of the race’s legacy.
Both Oldknow and Gelant competed in the women’s and men’s Olympic Marathon (42km) over the weekend respectively with the former finishing 32nd while the latter finished 11th in the men’s marathon.

Chairman of the Durban International Marathon Local Organising Committee, Steve Mkasi, shared his thoughts ahead of next year’s event.
“Our goal is to create an unforgettable experience for both runners and spectators. With the commitment from athletes across 14 countries, we are poised to foster a spirit of camaraderie and competition that goes beyond the finish line.”
The Durban International Marathon serves as a qualifying race for the Comrades Marathon, solidifying its significance in the South African running calendar.
While the marathon attracts a stellar field of local runners, athletes from 14 countries are also expected to contest the World Ranking points at the marathon.
