Paint uMhlanga pink for breast cancer awareness

The beneficiary of the charity event is PinkDrive, an organisation with strong involvement in early detection of breast cancer.

UMHLANGA is about to turn pink as the first Let’s Run event, in aid of PinkDrive, takes place on August 31, starting at the Whalebone Pier at 08:00.

The event, hosted by Umhlanga Tourism, is open to everyone and is free for the public to enter.

Umhlanga Tourism chairperson Jeannie Sarno said it’s the perfect way to round off Women’s Month this August.

There will be tons of activities happening on the day, as well, including hairsprays at R20, free medical check-ups and the sale of pink ribbons, wigs and tutus from the PinkDrive mobile shop.

“The walk is about 5km long and starts at Whalebone Pier, reaches Breakers and then heads back to the pier. This is the organisation’s way of giving back to the community – for those who are affected by cancer. We all know someone who is affected by this disease, so we urge you to support Let’s Run in whichever way you can – whether you join the actual run or come have your hair sprayed, every donation towards PinkDrive counts. We are hoping that this will become an annual event,” she said.

Janice Benecke, marketing and events coordinator at PinkDrive Durban, said the organisation is excited about the relationship it has formed with Umhlanga Tourism and is looking forward to the support from the community.

“PinkDrive is committed to improving breast cancer awareness and education as well as providing free screening services to the medically uninsured across South Africa. We do this through sponsorships and events such as Let’s Run. Clinical breast examinations and health screenings from Mediskills will be available on the day so come and join us as we raise awareness about breast cancer and funds. We also have T-shirts on sale which participants can wear for the event,” she said.

Shirts are available on pre-order at R100. To order, email your proof of payment to sasha@pinkdrive.org, using your name and surname as reference, together with Umhlanga Tourism PinkDrive Shirt in the subject line. Shirts are available in sizes small to triple XL.
