Celebrate, remember and fight back at Relay For Life in Durban North

The community is invited to support the event which takes place this weekend in Durban North.

CANSA Relay For Life takes place at Northlands Girls’ High in Durban North on August 3 from 14:00 to 20:00.

Corporates, schools, organisations and clubs will take part in the fundraiser which honours those who succumbed to the disease as well as survivors.

Speaking to Northglen News, sustainability coordinator Natasha Brown said that CANSA Relay For Life is an impactful, team experience that mobilises cancer survivors and the community to stand together in the fight against cancer.

“It’s also an opportunity to remember loved ones who have passed away from cancer and to raise funds for the fight against cancer. The theme for this year is Step Up and Conquer, and we invite you all to join us,” she said.

There will also be a host of entertainment for the entire family, a variety of food stalls and activities for families to take part in.

The event opens with a Survivors’ Lap where cancer survivors will be celebrated and honoured. This is followed by a Caregivers’ Lap which recognises those who help cancer patients and loved ones in their journey.

CANSA will also be raising awareness for the Tobacco Control bill, with their team educating people on the bill and CANSA’s involvement as well as the display of a life-size colon tunnel. People can walk through ‘Collin the Colon Tunnel’, an inflated tunnel that replicates the human colon. CANSA staff will be on-site to share the impact of colorectal cancer in South Africa as one of the top three cancers that affect men and women.

The luminaria bag-lighting ceremony is also a beautiful part of the event where family members or friends light their decorated bags in memory of loved ones who succumbed to cancer.

The cost to enter the event is R20 per person, and children under five may enter for free.
