Serving is an honour for Durban North rotary president

The stalwart Rotarian is happy about being elected as president for the third time.

THIRD time is definitely a charm for Gussie Augustus who was elected as president of the Rotary Club of Durban North recently.

Speaking proudly of his tenure as a Rotarian, Augustus said he joined the club when it was still called the North Durban Rotary Club in 1990.

“It’s an honour to lead a club that has such a great history and has chartered other clubs, too,” he said.

“There’s a great sense of fulfilment that comes from putting others before yourself and giving with no expectation of receiving, which is what Rotary advocates. I plan on growing membership and, of course, continuing to help where help is needed,” he added.

The difficulty, he said, that the Rotary club faced at the moment, was attracting young members, something which he will work hard at during his reign.

“We encourage the younger generation to join as Rotary teaches you skills that you will use for the rest of your life, such as leadership, planning, decision-making and the like. You’re also taught to put others first,” he said.

Speaking about the moments at Rotary that stand out for him, Augustus said it would definitely be the time he inoculated a child with polio drops.

“Rotary International, for 25 years, have been working hard at eradicating polio. It’s now only evident in two countries,” he added.

He said that, more recently, they assisted the tornado victims in Seatides, which will always be memorable to him.

In his spare time, Augustus continues to serve others, this time at a sandwich drive and soup kitchen at the Durban North Methodist Church.
