Our Lady of Fatima nets fifth place at challenge

The Durban North School, which made its fifth appearance at the challenge, also placed in fifth position.

OUR Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School (DCS) finished fifth at this year’s Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge (July 20 and 21).

The Durban North School, which made its fifth appearance at the challenge, also placed in fifth position for the fifth time.

Fatima had a solid weekend with two wins, a draw and a loss in their four pool games.

They notched up their wins with a comfortable 9–0 win against Amanztimtoti High School and a 3–0 win against travelling Grantleigh School.

In their final game, Fatima took on Ferrum High School with fifth- and sixth-place playoffs and sealed victory in that game.

Gabi Howarth finished as top goal-scorer for the team and managed to find the back of the box with nine goals and was ably supported by Angelina Hall who pocketed four goals in her six games.

“It was an amazing weekend filled with hockey and fun. I am very proud of our team and the quality of hockey that our girls put out. The best moment for me was being able to have a great weekend of hockey with our team as it is the last time we will all play together and make a lot of memories together off and on the field,” said the captain for the Our Lady of Fatima team, Katrina De Carvalho.

The overall champion for the challenge was host school St Mary’s DSG, which claimed the trophy for the sixth time.

The SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge goes into hibernation until February next year, where the challenge will be celebrating its fifteenth year since its inaugural tournament in 2011.
