Durban North SAPS pleased with blood drive a success

A total of 31 donors showed up on the day to help the station reach its target of 15 pints.

RESIDENTS, members of the Durban North SAPS and the Durban North CPF rallied to support a blood drive last week at Kensington Square on Adelaide Tambo Drive.

The blood drive, which was initiated by the Durban North SAPS, was the idea of member Symona Govender as a way to honour her son, Kai’s memory.

Kai, who died in 2020, needed regular blood transfusions, and Govender felt the best way to pay it forward was to host the drive at the Durban North Blood Donor Clinic.

The idea was backed by the management at the station as well as the local CPF.

A total of 31 donors showed up on the day to help the station reach its target of 15 pints.

Durban North SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Nonhlanhla Shozi said she was pleased with the turnout and support.

“We are so pleased with how everything turned out, and it was a great success. What was important for us is that by donating blood, you are able to save as many as three lives. Symona shared her story with us about her son, and we, as a station, wanted to support that. The important message we helped share on the day was that donating blood can mean life-saving medical treatment for children, pregnant women, organ transplants and cancer treatments, to name a few,” she said.

Symona’s husband, Marlon, who runs the non-profit organisation (NPO), Golfing Sharks Social and Developmental Club, echoed Shozi’s comments.

“It was so touching to see so many people support the blood drive. I had people from my company take time to give back, and several members of our NPO also donated. I think we were able to drive awareness and hopefully help a few first-time donors to become regular donors,” he said.

Marlon Govender is proud of all the members who donated on the day. He is pictured with SANBS member ???.
Natasha Moodley was one of 31 donors who showed up on the day.
Symona Govender was pleased with the turnout from fellow SAPS members and members of the public.
