Durban North resident still paints at 100

ARTIST Thelma Buzzard takes inspiration from the world around her, be it trees or flowers or scenes.

The Durban North resident, who turned 100 on July 7, took up painting at a young age and has been painting for more than five decades.

Thelma, a resident of Birdsongs Retirement Home in Umgeni Park, has been honing her craft, working primarily with watercolour and water media.

She also taught many aspiring artists at her home in Portland Place, and art is a topic never far from her mind. Sitting in her living room surrounded by several framed pieces of her art, Thelma says she still has her art exhibited and has even sold one of her paintings recently.

“I was very creative growing up. My family were very much an outdoors family, and we would go up for weekends to the Hluhluwe Game Reserve. I began taking an interest in what was around me and did sketches and paintings from photographs I took. I love animals, but it was the flowers and indigenous trees that piqued my interest. I still enjoy painting even today, and you may find me, when I’m inspired, touching up my paintings,” she said.

When asked what the secret to her longevity is, Thelma simply replied, “Enjoying life.”

“I don’t think there is anything in particular. You just carry on with what you love and enjoy life. I do enjoy a glass of champagne every so often,” she said.

Thelma also recalled her special day which included a party in her honour.

“It was lovely. I was surrounded by my friends here, and I had my daughter also join in. I think there were around 40 people – it was great fun,” she said.

When she’s not painting, Thelma also enjoys watching sport, especially rugby when the Springboks play.
