Humphrey to contribute to Mandela Day in Glenashley

The owners of The Fat Frog in Glenashley are celebrating Mandela Day by having a Humphrey in their coffee shop and donating a portion of their proceeds on the day to Humphrey whose collections go to the SPCA.

DURBAN’S most popular fundraising dog statue, Humphrey, which can be found at public spots throughout Durban North and uMhlanga, has found yet another new home, this time in Glenashley.

As Mandela Month is upon us, and Mandela Day (July 18) is approaching, animal lovers, Claire Allan and Jenny Clark, could think of no better time to have the statue placed at their business premises – The Fat Frog.

“I’m a runner, and during one of our runs in Glenashley, we met Humphrey and his owner, and he told us the story of Humphrey (the original statue which is on the Umhlanga Promenade) and how much money Humphrey has raised for the SPCA,” said Allan.

“A friend of mine suggested we get a Humphrey for our shop, and when I spoke to Tanya from SPCA, she said we were in luck as the latest batch of Humphreys had just gone into production.

No sooner had that been organised and, coincidentally, the real Humphrey and his owner came to their coffee shop. They were so excited to be able to support such a worthy cause as Allan and Clark are both pet lovers, Allan having three dogs, with two being rescues.

Humphrey, also known as the dog-in-a-million, has raised over R1 million for SPCA to date.

“It was so good to see him again, and it was pure coincidence,” said Clark.

On Mandela Day, a percentage of their turnover will go into the Humphrey statue.

“For every R60 spent, we will donate R6.67 to the Humphrey statue which will then go to the SPCA,” said Allan.

“We are also calling on the community to drop off pet blankets, toys and dog and cat food at The Fat Frog throughout the month of July. We will then arrange for it to be delivered to the SPCA,” said Allan.

You can find them at 35 Newport Avenue, Glenashley.
