New wheels for Durban North baby home

Love on a Hanger, together with the proceeds of a Spring Market, sent Domino the Swiss francs needed for the vehicle.

MANY kilometres separate Zug and Durban (a little over 13 000) but the ladies of Lift International Church, in the capital of the canton of Zug, which is in the centre of Switzerland, have The Domino Foundation’s Babies’ Home in Durban North very close to their hearts.

Jenni Wallace, wife of the congregation’s lead elder, Peet, left the Indian Ocean shores of KZN ten years ago, but their affections for the people of South Africa’s east coast have never waned.

In 2003, Wallace established Domino’s Babies’ Home when she felt strongly that the Church of the Good Shepherd (now Anthem), which she and Peet were then leading, needed to respond to the plight of abandoned babies in Durban. Since their move overseas, Jenni has kept contact with the Babies’ Home.

“About five years ago, the ladies of our church wanted to raise money for something specific for the home,” she explained.

“I asked Precious Thabethe, the home’s House Mother, what was needed … a new vehicle was the top of her list.”
In 2018, Wallace launched Love on a Hanger in Zug, a boutique where preloved clothing would be given a new of life so that 100% of the funds generated would go to supporting vulnerable children around the world.

Thabethe spoke of how having a brand new reliable vehicle was making a difference to the ‘family’ of babies, toddlers and carers at the home.

We have to be out on the road so often – for doctors’ visits, appointments with Social Welfare and the courts, as well as outings for pleasure for the little ones. We are so grateful to our Swiss friends for their love and generosity.”

Thabethe can be contacted for more information on what help and support is needed at the babies’ home on 031 110 0730 or hello@domino.org.za.
