‘Randelas’ and clothing needed for Somerset Park fundraiser

The funds raised from the event will go to the Christian-based organisation, Lungisani Indlela, which serves the Amaoti community. They will use the money for a learner support programme, their children's safe house and holiday clubs and feeding programmes in the Amaoti area.

LUNGISANI Indlela, a non-profit organisation (NPO) north of Durban, is celebrating Mandela Month with a Coffee and Thrift event set to take place towards the end of July.

In the meantime, the organisation is looking for pre-loved clothing, still in good condition, to sell on the day.

Organiser for the event and board member of the organisation, Faye Curtis, said she got the idea from a friend who hosted a similar event to raise funds.

To make it more suitable for the cause, Curtis decided to add a cup of coffee and a raffle entry to each ticket that’s sold.

“Lungisani Indlela is a Christian-based organisation that was birthed in 2004. The organisation serves the Amaoti community which is home to high levels of unemployment, social problems and poverty. By supporting this event, you will be helping fund the various projects that we run in this area,” she said.

One such project is the Learner Support Programme, which covers social support for children in the community, in terms of Youth Worker home visits and care, uniforms, school shoes and excursions.

The programme sees children taught basic literacy skills as many are unable to read. They are also taught life skills and provided with the emotional support they require to flourish.

The other programmes that Lungisani Indlela facilitates are a Safe House for abandoned and abused children, holiday clubs and feeding programmes.

The safe house is a place of immediate safety for children in crisis from Amaoti. It is open to children from 5 to 18 years of age and currently has nine residents.

Speaking about the Mandela Day Coffee and Thrift, Curtis said the NPO was most grateful to Harvest Church in Somerset Park for offering their premises and sponsoring coffee for the event.

“The church always supports our initiatives, and for that, we are forever grateful. We are now calling on the community to come support the event and help us continue making a difference in the children’s lives. Bring your friends and family to support this worthy cause,” she said.

Throughout the event, there will information displayed about the NPO and the community it assists, including real-life stories.

The event starts at 14:00 and will have some lovely clothes to purchase and fantastic prizes up for grabs. Tickets can be purchased at the door. If you have any clothing items you would like to donate to sell, contact Curtis on 084 564 0670.
